Perry was the daughter of Laurie Metcalf (actor) and Jeff Perry (actor). The role of Jackie Harris was played by her mother in both her two appearances on Roseanne. Her parents, however, didn't want her to perform until she turned an adult fearing the effect of stress. Perry was shy during high school and didn't act. The actress began her acting career in the year 2000 at Northwestern University to gain friends after she was moved to the university from Boston University. Perry was a graduate of Boston University, relocated to New York in search of TV roles. She landed small parts in shows like Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Then, homelessness drove her to California for theater roles. Perry starred with her mother as part of The Other Place at Broadway, back in 2013. She performed with their father Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in the year 2015 at the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. Perry was in nine episodes of The Family, an ABC crime thriller The Family in 2016. Perry was also featured in an appearance on ABC's political thriller Scandal with her father. In the same year, she appeared as a younger character based on Mary Cooper on Young Sheldon (a CBS spinoff The Big Bang Theory) in which she played her mother as a young version. Despite her family link to the character she got the part through an audition.
